What a story I've got for you in my first post of 2014! Jason got in touch with me at the beginning of December saying that he was going to propose to his partner Lana on their upcoming trip to London from Washington, and whether I would be up for capturing this special moment for them. The plan was for it to be a complete surprise to Lana. Jason didn't want her to know that I would be photographing the actual proposal. Talk about pressure! In our consecutive e-mails we were putting together a very precise plan of how everything was going to happen. It was felt like a huge conspiracy and was good fun! We exchanged google streetviews of different spots in Hyde Park with drawn arrows and circles indicating everyone's positions. We agreed that I would pretend to be a tourist (thankfully that bit was easy enough in Hyde Park!) sitting on a specific bench in the Italian Gardens area of the park. On the day I had been in my spot for a few minutes when I noticed Jason and Lana approaching (we exchanged photos beforehand to know what we looked like). I hope I played it cool, because my heart just started racing. Millions of thoughts were going through my mind, like what if someone stood in the exact location we agreed, what would I do then, what would Jason do, what if it started raining?! A swan conveniently positioned itself right next to our agreed proposal location and a few tourists were stopping by to take a photo, which was obstructing my view. Heart was still racing. I used the situation to my advantage and pretended to be one of the tourists taking pictures of the swan. In a meantime Jason led Lana towards the fountain and got down on one knee. Lana said 'yes'! After the happy tears and introductions (remember Lana didn't know I would be there!) were out of the way we spent some time wandering around the area for a few portraits. Jason and Lana then headed to celebrate.
Capturing Lana's reaction and just generally such a special and beautiful moment in this couple's lives was a big privilege. I wish them happiness and hope they have an amazing wedding day!
